Register Now for 2025 Mist Net Event

Please register below and join us for the Mississippi Bat Working Group’s 22nd Annual Mist Net Event which will be held on July 28 – 30, 2025 at Tara Wildlife. Tara Wildlife is located in the Eagle Lake community about 30 minutes northwest of historic Vicksburg, Mississippi and 72 miles west of Jackson.

With 6 miles of Mississippi River frontage and 6,500 acres of oxbow lakes and bottomland hardwood forests, Tara is a beautiful site for Event volunteers for lodging, recreation and mist netting. Mist net sites will be located on the Tara property and surrounding Wildlife Management Areas and private hunting properties.

Recreational activities including canoeing and hiking will be available on site during the day. We will also have a field trip to the Vicksburg Military Park, which is not only a beautiful historic site but also contains three bat houses, a bridge, and the Illinois Monument containing hundreds of big brown bats and Brazilian free tailed bats. An agenda will be sent out shortly to registered participants.

These events are a great opportunity to learn more about bats and bat survey techniques for new volunteers, obtain handling experience (to those that are rabies vaccinated), contribute valuable data regarding bat species diversity and abundance in the state, and have fun!

We are offering Student Travel Grants for students to attend the Event. If you are interested in finding out more about this Grant opportunity or for an application, please contact Alison McCartney at alison_mccartney@fws.gov or 601-455-8780.
